Commission votes to remove tolls roads from Highway 281 project

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas Transportation Commission voted unanimously Thursday to remove tolls from the Highway 281 project on San Antonio's North Side.

The voted follows a decision made by the Alamo Mobility Regional Authority called for the project to be toll-free.

The project will be done in two phases.

Phase 1 will add two new controlled access lanes and an HOV lane in both directions from Loop 1604 to Stone Oak Parkway. It will cost $228 million.

Phase 2 will add two new controlled access lanes and an HOV lane between Stone Oak Parkway and the Bexar County line. The price tag for phase 2 is $304 million.

The Alamo RMA intends to fund the remaining portion of the project should voters approve Proposition 7 in November, allowing the Texas Department of Transportation to complete the Highway 281, Loop 1604 interchange.
