SAN ANTONIO -

Longtime commissioner Tommy Adkisson says he's running for Bexar County's top job.

Adkisson announced Sunday afternoon he will be a candidate for county judge in next year's election.

That decision would apparently set up a showdown with current county judge and former San Antonio Mayor Nelson Wolff.

Both are Democrats.

Adkisson is in his fourth term as a Bexar County commissioner.

He also served two terms in the Texas House.

The 64 year-old Adkisson has worked on county jail, health care, road improvement and other issues.

Wolff has been county judge since 2001. He announced his plans to seek re-election in 2012.

Adkisson says he considered running for county judge before Wolff took office.

He says he now thinks the time is right for a change.

Adkisson will file for the county judge election on Monday.
