The community came together Saturday to donate blood to help a San Antonio firefighter.
Matt Alanis has been with the San Antonio Fire Department for more than 25 years and was diagnosed with multiple myleoma, a non-curable, rare blood cancer.
Saturday, the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center and the organization, Heart 2 Heart 4 U, held the blood drive at Viola's Ventanas.
"We are so grateful because so many people have come out from all over," said Diana Barris Trevino, a helper with the event. "We thank the fire department. We've had some firefighters come out. We're just thrilled of the outcome. It's been awesome."
The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center said there is always a need for blood donations and especially now as the cold weather has impacted collections.
