Community rallies around family after fire destroys home

SAN ANTONIO – Family, friends and the community came together for a BBQ plate sale to raise money and help support Linda Barrera and her family.

Barrera's home was destroyed by heavy smoke and engulfed in flames just over a week ago.

"It still hurts because the house is a 4th generation," said Barrera.

Dozens of people stopped by, what use to be the family’s home in the 3000 block of Monterey and dropped off donations.

"I think it's fantastic that everybody came together and worked to support each other and helps somebody who needs help," said Kenneth Johnson.

The Barrera family was overwhelmed by the turnout. Barrera says over 800 plates were sold and some people had to be turned away.

"Well were hungry so we need to find something to eat but it's fantastic that they had enough support that they couldn't feed us," Johnson said.

The Barrera family plans to rebuild their home and hopes the money raised will help them do so.
