SAN ANTONIO -

If you are looking to save money on new prescription eyeglasses, a Consumer Reports survey suggests shopping at Costco or online.

The survey of nearly 20,000 subscribers found people who shopped locally at the doctor's office or a mom and pop store were the most satisfied.

"Readers gave independent shops and private doctors' offices top marks for the quality of the glasses, but also for customer care and follow-up service," said Consumer Reports' Margot Gilman.

But they are also among the most expensive places to shop.

You can save as much as 40 percent on eyewear if you know where to shop, according to Consumer Reports. Costco came out on top of their survey when it came to saving money.  Shoppers can expect to pay less than $200 for glasses at Costco and still get above average quality, service and staff expertise.   Costco's selection, however, is limited.

For huge selection and low prices, shopping online is a good option.

"It can be more work. You have to try the frames on and then find them online, but you can save a bundle," Gilman said.

Two sites to check out are www.framesdirect.com and  www.eyeglasses.com.

If you have a basic prescription, Consumer Reports said online retailers that sell their own brands of frames are worth a look. Websites like www.warbyparker.com will even mail frames to you to try on at no charge.

If service and follow-up care are important to you, Consumer Reports recommends private doctors, independent shops and Costco.
