Council votes to accept $1 million donation for East Side park

H-E-B CEO had pledged to help redevelopment of Lincoln Park

SAN ANTONIO – The newly minted City Council voted to accept a $1 million donation from the CEO of H-E-B, which will go towards improvements for an East Side park.

Charles C. Butt had pledged to help with redevelopment of Lincoln Park, which is in the 2900 block of East Commerce Street.

"Creating community spaces where families can enjoy recreation and the outdoors together has been a passion of H-E-B for many years," Butt said. "I am pleased to participate personally in Lincoln Park and in the effort to create a vibrant source for health and wellness, education and the powerful spirit of community."

The council voted Thursday to accept that donation, and as per the donation agreement, match it using money from the recently passed city bond.

"It's these kinds of philanthropic gifts that demonstrate the power of matching public and private dollars to accomplish the goals of our community, including improving our parks," Mayor Ron Nirenberg said. "The citizens of San Antonio voted to approve the 2017 bond because they recognized the importance of investing in our future as we prepare for significant growth in San Antonio."

Some of the improvements include a splash pad, which will be built just in time for next year's Tricentennial celebration.

"The Tricentennial commemorative year will include landmark events from our more than 500 partners, history and education initiatives, arts and culture events, a celebration of our military history and, as demonstrated today, investments in legacy projects to serve San Antonio in the future," Tricentennial Commission President Robert Thrailkill said.

All the renovations are scheduled to be completed by 2020.
