Couple welcome first San Antonio baby born in 2017

Baby girl born at Metropolitan Methodist Hospital

SAN ANTONIO – A couple celebrated the new year in a local hospital welcoming their little girl into the world.

University of the Incarnate Word nursing student Jocelyn Ramo Campechano, 19, gave birth to a girl at Metropolitan Methodist Hospital.

"It was exciting, and whenever she got here it was so beautiful," Campechano said.

After two days of waiting, Jayme Campechano was born at 11 minutes past midnight, weighing 6 pounds, 7 ounces. The new member of the family is named after her grandfather.

"I was like, 'Oh my God, finally,' but then I wanted to see her and hold her the whole time," Campechano said.

"What was the first thing that went through your mind the first time you held her?" reporter Ashley Custer asked.
"I just fell in love," Campechano said.

Not only was it a memorable moment for the new parents, but it was also a very special one for the hospital, which said this is the first time in more than a decade that it has delivered the first baby of the new year in San Antonio.

"It was a great surprise to see Jayme, to see how happy they were when they saw their first kid," Dr. Christian Santiago said. "It was amazing. It was a great experience."

"(I) didn't imagine it," Campechano said. "It was pretty exciting. I mean, I couldn't believe it. I wasn't planning on it either."

San Antonio-area hospitals are sending off the new parents with some special gifts for baby Jayme. They included gift cards, a baby car seat,  portable playpen and a $10,000 scholarship courtesy of UIW.

But the new parents said no gift compares to their bundle of joy.

"(We're) just enjoying her right now before she grows," Campechano said.
