SAN ANTONIO -

Highway 281 South near Loop 1604 is expected to be closed until Friday night after an 18-wheeler crashes into a bridge early Wednesday afternoon.

According to the San Antonio Police Department, a big rig with its bed raised was traveling south on Highway 281 when it struck the bridge at Henderson Pass at 12:11 p.m.

The impact caused significant damage to the bridge and caused several traffic accidents after cement fell into the northbound lanes.

All lanes of traffic on Highway 281 South between Sonterra Boulevard and Donella were closed and are expected to remain that way for 24 hours.

Highway 281 North traffic that exit to North Loop 1604 will also be closed for at least 24 hours, police said.

Bridge repair teams with the Texas Department of Transportation will work around the clock to allow traffic to safely resume on the south-bound lanes of U.S. Highway 281 near Loop 1604 by Friday night.

Traffic is being diverted onto frontage roads where closures are in place. Drivers in the area are advised to consider alternate routes -- such as Blanco and Bulverde roads -- to reach their destination.
