TABC conducting alcohol selling compliance checks

Undercover operation happening throughout September

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is conducting its annual back-to-school undercover sting operation during the month of September.

Undercover TABC agents hit 40 locations Thursday by escorting a minor to area stores.

"We are going to a number of convenience stores in the area, liquor stores, grocery stores. Our minor will go in, select a beverage, take it to the counter and now the ball is in the clerk’s court," said Sgt. Brad Warner.

The businesses selected were near universities or schools. Some locations have had issues in the past.

"They don't have fake IDs. They don't beg or try to trick the clerk into making the sale. We are simply trying to make a compliance check," Warner said.

During Thursday's operation, only one far North Side store sold alcohol to TABC's minor. Warner said The Old Tymer retail location, and its clerk, could face administrative and possibly criminal charges.

Warner said selling to a minor is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.
