SAN ANTONIO -

A 47-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the robbery of a clerk at a Dollar General store, thanks to a tip that San Antonio police received through their Crime Stoppers line.

Richard Frederick Smith is charged with one count of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

An arrest affidavit stated that police aired surveillance video from the store in the 100 block of Castroville Road on local TV stations.

Within hours of the Aug. 27 robbery, detectives had received a tip, helping them identify a suspect, the affidavit stated.

The clerk told detectives a man who entered the store spent about 45 minutes looking around and asking questions about merchandise. She said, at one point, he asked for a pack of cigarettes.

The affidavit stated that when she turned around to hand the man the cigarettes, he pointed a gun at her and demanded money from the cash register and safe, as well as the clerk’s car keys.

Police said the suspect later identified as Smith then drove off in the clerk’s car. Surveillance video from the store aired on TV the next day, the affidavit stated.
