He was on the run since March 2005, but Thursday the Internal Revenue Service and the United States Marshals Office caught up to Sterling Benningfield at an HEB store in Alamo Heights.
Benningfield was one of more than 60 wanted people featured on KSAT's Crime Takedown Day Feb. 12.
"We were able to get some tips on (Benningfield's) whereabouts which resulted in his arrest today," said I.R.S. Special Agent Mike Lemoine.
A federal indictment alleges Benningfield reported earning no income to the I.R.S. from 1998-2000. During that time, Lemoine said Benningfield earned more than $1.1 million.
"This is a very serious offense. Mr. Benningfield thought it was so serious that after he learned of the indictment, he's been a fugitive since 2005," Lemoine said.
Lemoine said Benningield appeared before a magistrate Thursday afternoon. The I.R.S. is seeking Benningfield's detention because he had been a fugitive.
