SAN ANTONIO -

The allure of capturing the $425 million Powerball jackpot has players in a buying frenzy, further confirming that Powerball players often don't get into the game until the jackpot offers big bucks.

A recent game change increased the frequency of huge jackpots, and Wednesday's third largest-ever jackpot comes only a few months after the biggest Powerball jackpot in history -- a $590 million pot won in Florida.

Lottery officials acknowledge smaller jackpots don't create the buzz they once did, and there's a bit of jackpot fatigue.

But when jackpots swell, people still line up for their chance at a life-changing payoff, even though the odds of winning the top prize are the same if there is a small jackpot.

The next drawing is scheduled for Wednesday night.

Stores with past Powerball winners draw crowds

Ticketholders aren't the only ones who benefit from a win like the one expected in the latest Powerball drawing.

Stores known for selling winning tickets also see their business pick up as superstitious dreamers pour in, hoping luck will strike again.

The jackpot for Wednesday's drawing would fetch a single winner a lump-sum payment of about $244.7 million.

"(If I won,) I would help out," said Vanessa Sanchez, store clerk at the Texas Food Store in the 400 block of Cupples Road. "Everybody in my family would be a millionaire. I'd buy a house, a car, my own business."

But Multi-State Lottery Association executive director Chuck Strutt says if no winning combination for the major jackpot is drawn Wednesday, "we would be in world record territory" going into Saturday's drawing.

The world's highest lottery jackpot was a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot sold in March 2012.
