2 injured in crash at troubled far West Bexar County intersection

Residents continue fight for traffic light at Potranco Road, Bella Vista Place

SAN ANTONIO – A two-car head-on collision Tuesday morning in far West Bexar County is the latest crash to occur at a troubled intersection that has been the subject of a KSAT 12 Defenders investigation.

The crash was reported around 7:30 a.m. at the corner of Potranco Road and Bella Vista Place.

According to Bexar County sheriff's investigators, a woman and a child in one car were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Charles Ukaegbu and his daughter were in the other car just starting out their day.

"I'm OK. My daughter's OK. But the car is totaled," he said.

The intersection, which includes fast-moving traffic on Potranco Road that meets up with drivers trying to exit the Bella Vista subdivision, has seen more than its share of trouble in recent months.

"It's really a very dangerous intersection," Ukaegbu said. "I've seen so many accidents, so many deaths on this particular spot. It's about time something's done about it."

A Defenders investigation revealed there had been more than 15 crashes at the same intersection in recent months.

The investigation revealed that many of Ukaegbu's neighbors in the Bella Vista subdivision petitioned the county and Texas Department of Transportation more than a year ago to have a traffic light installed.

But the project has seen numerous delays.

The latest completion date offered by TxDOT is for the light to be installed in July.

In a statement Tuesday morning, TxDOT spokesman Josh Donat said a private developer is handling the work and appears to be on schedule.

Ukaegbu wishes the project would have taken a note from the traffic on the street and moved along quickly.

"For me, it's too late, you know? July didn't come fast enough," he said.
