According to a statement issued from his office, family members of San Antonio City Councilman David Medina were involved in a traffic incident Thursday that resulted in an arrest.
Medina represents District 5 on the San Antonio City Council.
According to a police report, a man named David Larry Medina, 48, was arrested for interfering with a police officer and resisting arrest after an incident off Interstate 35.
As Friday afternoon, he councilman's office had refused to confirm if the man is Medina's father.
That incident started after San Antonio police pulled over a driver on northbound Interstate 35 near Division for failing to move over or slow down for a stopped emergency vehicle. That driver was identified as David Larry Medina’s daughter, who pulled into the parking lot of Brothers Tacos.
The police report shows she did not have an ID or driver’s license. The woman called her mother, the report said, and the mother agreed to come to the scene.
A short time later, the report states, the mother and David Larry Medina arrived. The report indicates the mother started to become angry. David Larry Medina, it said, was highly agitated.
San Antonio police spokesman Sgt. Javier Salazar said the situation was volatile.
"David Medina, 48 years of age, stepped out of that vehicle, words were exchanged with one of the officers and a struggle ensued," Salazar said.
The report said Medina asked his wife to call the chief and the mayor. Then it said Medina had his daughter "squeezed real tight up against his body," and got a baby out of a car seat and was using them as human shields.
Brothers waitress Yolanda Hernandez did not see the incident but heard bits and pieces of what was going on from customers.
"We were just here and people were outside,” Hernandez said. “They were just saying that there were a lot of cops out there but we didn't know what was going on."
In the end, an officer had to utilize his stun gun on Medina.
"Mr. Medina was placed under arrest and was subsequently booked for interference with public duties and for resisting arrest," Salazar said.
On Friday afternoon, no one was home and the gate was locked at the address listed for Medina and the shades were drawn.
District 5 City Councilman David Medina was not at City Hall for a comment.
