Closure of Career Point College child care facility stuns students

Some students question whether they can continue classes

SAN ANTONIO – Career Point College announced this week that it will shut down its child care facility Sept. 30, surprising many students who rely on the service to be able to attend classes.

The school notified students in a letter dated on Aug. 29.

“It means my future has to be put hold,” said one student and mother of two, who asked to remain anonymous.

She pays $65 a week to send her toddler to New Beginning Daycare, Inc., owned by Career Point College and located just minutes from the campus in the Wonderland of the Americas Mall.

“That’s all you hear in the hallways. ‘Did you hear about the day care? Did you hear about the day care? I don’t know what I’m going to do,’” said the student.

A spokesperson for Career Point said Wednesday that the closing of the facility was a “business decision” made after an “in-depth analysis.”

The school said it’s looking for discounts for students at other local day care providers. But for the mother KSAT 12 Defenders spoke to, the cost is still too high.

“With the other options they gave me, they're not even close to that,” she said. “How am I going to afford that?"

Some students have the cost of child care lumped into their student loans.

In a written statement, Career Point said, "Students may continue receiving these funds that may be paid to a different child care provider."

Career Point said it will provide students a $500 check to help them find child care elsewhere.

The mother who spoke to the KSAT 12 Defenders believes the closure will likely force her to drop out.

"There’s so many people trying to get out of the system, trying not to get government assistance, trying to be the first person in their family to succeed, trying to be the first person in their family to graduate,” she said. “And this is just one big wall that they have to jump over.”
