Company involved in fatal South Texas accident had buses pulled from service

3 inspections show 12 violations

SAN ANTONIO – The KSAT Defenders looked into the bus involved in an accident Saturday that killed eight and injured more than 40 people.

Though the most recent federal safety rating showed a satisfactory rating, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, OGA has had issues with other buses.

THE FMCSA website shows the company kept relatively poor records of driver logs. The administration also reported in the last two years OGA buses have been inspected three times, and twice buses were pulled from service.

The national average for buses pulled out of service is 20 percent.

The three inspections show 12 violations including:

  • Brakes
  • Defective emergency exits or none at all
  • Defective brake warning device
  • Inoperative tail lamp
  • Operation of a commercial motor vehicle without proof of a periodic inspection

The company had no other recorded accidents or injuries in the past two years. It also carries a $5 million insurance policy effective Feb. 23.
