Defenders obtains cost of Edgewood ISD board room

SAN ANTONIO – Last week, the KSAT 12 Defenders exposed complaints about high salaries for administrators in Edgewood Independent School District -- one of the city's poorest school districts -- and about construction of a boardroom, for which cost the district would not release the cost.

The Defenders have since obtained that figure.

Edgewood ISD budgeted $278,000 for the new boardroom at what used to be Guerra Elementary. Spawglass is being paid $183,000 for construction.

The board has been traveling to various schools for their meetings and this will provide a permanent meeting place, as well as space for workshops and more.

District resident Agapita Jaramillo said some Edgewood leaders are mostly looking out for themselves.

"They need to focus on the academics, on our students instead of their salaries, instead of their pockets," said Jaramillo.

Construction of the boardroom is being done through a purchasing cooperative of which the district is a member. The boardroom is expected to be completed by mid-September.
