Man re-indicted in 2013 shooting that injured SAPD officer

Rene Alfaro faces charge of attempted capital murder of a police officer

SAN ANTONIO – A Bexar County grand jury this week indicted a man accused of attempting to kill a San Antonio police officer as he sat in his patrol car in 2013.

Rene Alfaro, 29, was arrested Friday morning, a day after he was indicted on a first-degree felony charge of attempted capital murder of a police officer.

Alfaro was first arrested in October 2013, after police said he and another man targeted San Antonio Officer Reynaldo Bustos as he sat in a marked unit along Old Highway 90.

A bullet fired from an assault rifle with a scope shattered Bustos' computer, sending glass and plastic into his eyes, according to previous media reports. Bustos underwent emergency surgery to remove the shrapnel from his eyes, according to those reports.

City records indicate Bustos later returned to active duty.

While the case against Alfaro's co-defendant, Oscar Padilla, moved forward, deadly conduct and attempted capital murder of a peace officer charges against Alfaro were dismissed in 2015 pending further investigation.

A spokesperson for the Bexar County District Attorney's Office said Friday that the case against Alfaro was reopened earlier this week.

The spokesperson confirmed that new information about the case came to light, but declined to say what the information was, calling it a "pending matter."

Padilla pleaded guilty in February to attempted capital murder of a police officer. He is scheduled to be sentenced in July.
