During a stop in San Antonio on Thursday, Sen. Wendy Davis, a Democratic candidate for Texas governor, said that the children of Texas deserve a full day Pre-K program.
A program, Davis said, that ideally would be modeled after San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro’s Pre-K 4 SA program.
“The opportunities that are happening right here in the Alamo City should be opportunities that are available to every single child across the state,” Davis said.
The senator said that a Pre-K program statewide is more than just about education. It is an investment.
“With a $16 return for every dollar spent on Pre-K, it doesn’t take a financial genius to understand that it is an investment worth making,” she said.
Davis was joined by Castro and Sen. Leticia Van de Putte as she discussed her plan at Leal Middle School.
Both Davis and Van de Putte, who is running as a Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, are expected to win in next month’s Democratic primary election.
In the fall, Davis will face Republican Greg Abbott.
On Thursday afternoon, Abbott's office released this statement:
"Sen. Davis knows one approach to public education: more spending. But that’s what you can expect from a political panderer: more money to fund the failed policies of the past. Texans aren’t fooled, and they can see right through Sen. Davis’ fuzzy proposal that will add billions in new spending without a glimmer of hope that education in Texas reaches its full potential."
Van de Putte will face one of the four Republicans running for lieutenant governor in that party’s primary.
They include Sen. Dan Patrick, Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples, Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and incumbent Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst.
