Department of Public Safety asks drivers to exercise extra caution during Labor Day weekend

Troopers made 488 DWI arrests last year during Labor Day weekend

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas Department of Public safety is asking drivers to be extra cautious this Labor Day weekend. Troopers will join other law enforcement agencies to stop any impaired drivers, speeders and safety belt violators.

“During the Labor Day weekend, Troopers will be on the lookout for impaired and dangerous drivers, and we are urging drivers to do their part by strictly obeying traffic laws and finding alternative transportation if they plan to drink,” said Steven McCraw, Department of Public Safety director.

Last year during the Labor Day weekend, troopers made 488 DWI arrests and issued 8,515 speeding citations.

The Department of Public Safety offers safety to drivers during the Labor Day holiday:

  • Never drink and drive.

  • Do not use mobile devices in the car that can cause distractions

  • Always wear your seat belt and make sure everyone else in the vehicle wears theirs, too.

  • Slow down during heavy traffic.

  • Slow down or move over for police, fire or medical service vehicles, as well as Texas Department of Transportation vehicles stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated.

  • Don’t drive if you are too tired.
