SAN ANTONIO -

An off-duty deputy is in serious but stable condition after a drug bust shootout early Sunday.

The deputy was off-duty and working security at an apartment complex in the 3900 block of Fredericksburg.

Just before 3 a.m. two other deputies drove into the complex searching for a wanted suspect.

The sheriff's office says those deputies spotted an apparent drug dealing happening and moved in to investigate.

An S.O. captain says when the deputies moved in three drug suspects tried to leave.

They hit the deputies' patrol car.

According to the S.O. the off-duty deputy then came to assist.

The captain says the deputies and the suspects exchanged gunfire, and when the shooting stopped the off-duty deputy and one suspect had been wounded.

The off-duty deputy had a gunshot wound to the face.

EMS transported him to University Hospital in serious but stable condition.

The suspect was shot in the shoulder and also went to University.

The captain says investigators do not yet know whether the off-duty deputy was shot by a suspect or by another deputy.

The captain also says drugs were found in the suspect vehicle.

The two other suspects were arrested and charges are now pending.
