Dress for Success asks community to make space in its closet for good

Donations go to those who need clothes for work

SAN ANTONIO – If you ever wanted to clean out your closet to make some space, the San Antonio chapter of Dress for Success wants to help you get motivated. In fact, they would like for you to pack up your unwanted casual and professional clothing and drop it off at Great Clips, so that it can make its way to women and men who are re-entering the workplace.

The Make Space for Good Campaign runs through Monday. Dress for Success hopes lots of men and women choose to clean out their crowded closets of items they no longer wear, don’t fit, or in some cases, never even wore.

Dawn Thurmond, of Dress for Success, said it's surprising how many unusable items may be stuffed in the nooks and crannies of people's closets that could be put to great use.

"Remember that we are working with women (who) are zero to low-income, and so a lot of what you have in your closet is really a treat and a treasure. When you have nothing, that is something," she said.

Thurmond said that any type of garment, including undergarments, blouses, pants, jeans, purses and even jewelry can help a woman who only has a pair of jeans and T-shirt to her name become one who is presentable for a job interview.

Thurmond suggests hiring a closet organizer to help if you don’t know where to start.

Andrea Mery Yancy, of Organizing You, recommends looking at whether you have more than one item of the same style. If that’s the case, keep the one you usually wear, then donate the unused one. Shoes that hurt, clothes you outgrew and items that are no longer in style are suggested for donation.
