A driver died early Tuesday morning after San Antonio police said he drove his car off a bridge and landed in the San Antonio River.
San Antonio police said the driver, a man in his mid-20s, was speeding west down Southeast Military Drive between Presa and Mission Parkway just after 2 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle.
The driver went across the median and down an embankment before the car crashed into the water.
The car left the road before reaching the bridge, so there were no guardrails in the area, police said.
San Antonio police and fire crews responded, but were unable to the save the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office would determine whether the driver died upon impact or drowned.
The water rescue team from the San Antonio Fire Department used air bags to float the vehicle to the surface before it was pulled out of the water.
No other vehicles were believed to be involved in the accident, and police said all of the windows in the car were up at the time, so they were confident no one else was inside.
