SAN ANTONIO – UPDATE: The medical examiner has identified the driver as Sergio Correa, 30.

---------ORIGINAL STORY---------

Investigators are trying to identify the victim of a deadly, fiery wreck just north of downtown.

The crash happened near Camden Street and Newell Avenue. Police and fire crews arrived at the scene about 7 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses told officers the car was speeding down the road before it slammed into a building. Police said there wasn’t any structural damage to the building, but the vehicle had a smashed windshield, cracked windows and twisted metal.

Officers said they believe the driver died on impact before the car caught fire, but the body was so badly burned that investigators are having a tough time determining the victim’s age, gender or race.

It’s unclear what led the driver to drive straight into the building.

The crash led to closures in the area. Officers turned the case over to traffic investigators.
