SAN ANTONIO -

The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office has released the name of the driver killed in a high-speed crash on the East Side early Monday morning.

Derrick Thomas, 27, died around 3 a.m. after he slammed his car into a concrete pillar on Martin Luther King Drive under Interstate 10 East.

Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene and was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, San Antonio police said.

A female passenger who was wearing a seat belt was rushed to San Antonio Military Medical Center with serious but stable injuries, police said.

Police said Thomas struck the pillar as he was speeding down MLK Drive, and lost control of the car where the road slightly bends to the right.
