SAN ANTONIO -

A driver ran over a utility box early Thursday morning and knocked out electricity to several homes in northeast San Antonio.

The driver told KSAT crews he ran into a dead end on Bret Springs Street near Fort Maddin Street and attempted to back his SUV out of the area when he struck a utility box on the sidewalk.

The driver said he didn't see the box because of thick, heavy fog. CPS Energy crews were called to the crash scene to restore power to the area.

According to a CPS Energy worker, the box contains about 19,000 volts of electricity. The worker said at least 40-50 customers were affected.

CPS Energy crews called a wrecker to tow the SUV and kept other vehicles off the street because the voltage is dangerous.
