SAN ANTONIO -

A two alarm fire on the east side sent multiple fire crews to a sofa upholstery warehouse.

It happened just after 7 p.m. Friday in the 3300 block of East Commerce Street.

No workers were in the warehouse, but firefighters said it was filled with material to reupholster furniture. Those items made firefighting more difficult for crews.

Crews said the warehouse is about 46,000 square feet and the fire was basically concentrated in the front area.  It took 18 units made up of about 70 firefighters to safely put out the fire.

Assistant Chief Mike Walsh from the San Antonio Fire Department said, “with the foam insulation as you can imagine with any type of upholstery shop you got that heavy thick foam well that stuff is petroleum based and it burns and puts off heavy black smoke, so again it was so bad the guys inside the building couldn't even see their hand in front of their face."

Walsh said the warehouse appeared to only be used as a storage facility and no electricity was running to the building at the time of the fire.

There were no injuries reported to any firefighters. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
