Edgewood ISD superintendent, board of managers sworn in

SAN ANTONIO – The newly appointed superintendent and board of managers, who will take over Edgewood ISD, were officially sworn in Tuesday night.

More than 100 community members and parents showed up for the group's first day.

"I look forward to working collaboratively with the rest of the board of managers and Dr. (Sylvester) Perez to advance student outcomes, bring back accountability, transparency and most importantly, trust in the Edgewood community," said Amanda Gonzalez, who holds a spot on the Board of Managers at Edgewood ISD.

Jose Arzola is now an Edgewood ISD grandparent. He said all of his children graduated from the district.

"We can see a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel, considering all the turmoil and the discourse that has been going on with the district," said Arzola.

Edgewood ISD has been under investigation by the TEA since February after a number of problems within the board. Among them, the board couldn't reach an agreement, making it impossible for the district to make decisions, that includes hiring a new superintendent.

TEA director of School Governance Ron Rowell said Tuesday is a new beginning with the newly appointed board of managers.

"They've gone through background checks," said Rowell. "They've gone through another round of interviews and in that time, we kept sifting out, sifting out and finally recommended to the commission of education these five individuals."

It was also the first night for the new superintendent, Perez, who once led SAISD.

"We are in a much different place right now than where we are going to be in another six months," said Perez. "I'm looking forward to working with the board of managers, looking forward to working with staff members, listening to students and embrace the culture that is Edgewood."

The newly appointed board of managers will meet again sometime in June.
