Homeowner burglarized 4 times recently

SAN ANTONIO - When he shot and wounded a burglary suspect in his near South Side home early Tuesday, Felipe Salazar, 79, had a feeling it was the same person who had broken into his home and stolen two shotguns a few days ago.

His suspicions were confirmed when the suspect, a man in his 20s, offered to return the shotguns as he lay wounded in Salazar's driveway.

Apparently referring to an accomplice, Salazar said the suspect said, "He got your shotguns if you want them back."

Salazar said he declined the offer.

"I didn't want to take a chance leaving him – he might get up and go," Salazar said.

He held the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived.

Salazar's ordeal began just after 1 a.m. on Tuesday when he spotted an intruder in his bedroom.

"I didn't want to kill the guy, so I took a shot to his body," he said. "I hit him two times."

Salazar said he had been the target of burglars four times recently. He said he had been sleeping with a pistol at his side.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Police say he will be booked later on burglary charges.
