SAN ANTONIO -

A Northwest Side resident is accused of beating up an elderly man who stepped in to stop him from attacking a woman.

Michael Gonzales Cruz, 28, was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Bexar County Jail on a charge of injury to the elderly.

The victim, an 84-year-old man, suffered bruises and swelling to his face, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

He told San Antonio police that after answering a knock on his door on Monday, he found a woman hiding on his door step and begging for help, the affidavit stated.

Within a few minutes, a man who was later found to be her boyfriend, ran up to the door and appeared to be preparing to punch the woman, the affidavit stated.

The elderly man told police he stepped in between them, and Cruz instead punched him in the face several times, the affidavit stated.
