Push is on to get local voters to register for general election

SA public library branches, SAISD schools among locations to sign up

SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County elections officials are making a big push Tuesday to get eligible voters to sign up to cast a ballot in next month's general election.

The push is part of National Voter Registration Day, when volunteers, celebrities and organizations nationwide are hitting the streets in hopes of reaching voters who didn't plan on casting a ballot Nov. 8.

Residents in Bexar County can visit any San Antonio public library to sign up to vote.

About 70 schools in the San Antonio Independent School District are also serving as official registration stations.

Bexar County elections administrator Jacque Callanen said the county has already reached a record high for registered voters.

"Our numbers are going up every single day," Callanen said. "This morning, we had 1.25 million people registered in Bexar County. The numbers are climbing by 500 to 2,000 a day."

Callalen said eligible voters can also download and print a voter registration application from the elections office and mail it in.

Voters already registered to vote can visit the elections department website to make sure their information is current.

Anyone with questions can call 210-335-VOTE (8683).

The deadline to register is Oct. 11.
