SAN MARCOS, Texas – A family dog that investigators said killed a baby girl in her home Tuesday has been impounded while a "determination" is made as to whether it will be euthanized, according to a statement issued by the city of San Marcos.
San Marcos animal control officers impounded the German shepherd after the 2-month-old was found unresponsive and suffering animal bite wounds in a home in the 1000 block of Sagewood.

The child's father told San Marcos police and Child Protective Services that he fell asleep when the child was napping in an infant bouncer. According to the city's statement, when he awoke, the father found the baby "unresponsive and cold to the touch, with obvious injury."
The child was taken to Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos, where she was pronounced dead.
The dog will be impounded for at least 10 days, according to the statement, "after which a determination will be made on whether it will be euthanized."
The dog was a pet that had been with the family for more than eight years.
