Family forced to rebuild after Hurricane Ike lends hand to those affected by Harvey

San Antonio has taken in nearly 1,000 evacuees

SAN ANTONIO – If Hurricane Harvey had tracked just 30 miles West, Mayor Ron Nirenberg said it would have been a "much different story" for San Antonio.

Instead, Nirenberg said the city is in a position to help the areas most impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

San Antonio hospitals have taken in more than 700 patients from the storm and the food bank continues to prepare 4,000 meals a day for more than 950 evacuees.

"We have, so far, been lucky in avoiding the most devastating impacts of the rain," Nirenberg said Sunday afternoon.

Nirenberg announced the city will scale back on daily emergency activities and remain on standby to support areas feeling the brunt of Harvey.

Stephanie McClain and her two kids, who nearly nine years ago fled their home in Galveston, volunteered at the food bank on Sunday.

"It didn't hit me until later that we were not going back to that life," McClain said of her experience during Ike.

For McClain, helping hurricane evacuees allows her family's experience to come full circle.

"I want them to connect with the experience," McClain said. "They're able to see the evacuation from different eyes here. Watching this happen to other people and being able to help I feel like it's really important to connect back with that."

San Antonio Food Bank officials are asking those who want to help out to sign up on their website.
