Family and friends of Sharon Ledesma, 28, hosted a barbecue Sunday to raise money to pay for her funeral.
The barbecue took place outside the Auto Zone at 3539 Culebra Road, just west of St. Mary's University.
Ledesma, a mother of three, died while trying to push two of her children out of the way of an oncoming car.
She was also an organ donor.
On Saturday morning, one of her kidneys was transplanted into Daniel Govea, 52.
"She saved a total of seven lives all together, with the children and the organ recipients," said Larry Diaz, a friend of the family.
Diaz manned the grill as hundreds of people lined up outside the Auto Zone to help the Ledesma family. He said he was not expecting such a large crowd, made up of so many friendly faces he didn't know.
"Really, we got a lot of strangers that just came in and started helping out, so we needed all the help we could get," Diaz said.
The family plans to lay Ledesma to rest sometime this week. Until then, they will continue to raise money for her funeral.
