A man whose body was found in the backyard of a home near Loop 410 and Starcrest Sunday morning has been identified as Scorpio Barber, 22.
San Antonio police said the case is still under investigation. However, they believe Barber was hit by a car as he walked along the access road around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
The impact sent him flying over an 8-foot-high retaining wall into the backyard.
A woman who lives in that home in the 3800 block of Deerfield Road discovered his body about 12 hours later and called police.
"The injuries my baby suffered ... it doesn't make any sense," said Rhonda Harris, Barber’s mother, from her home Wednesday morning. "He was my heart. He was my best friend. And now he's gone."
Harris said she believes Barber, the oldest of her three sons, may have been walking from his brother’s apartment to a nearby convenience store when he was hit.
She said she and her family weren’t notified of his death until late Monday.
According to a police report, officers who responded weren’t sure how he died at first.
Now, police said they suspect his death may have been related to a two-vehicle crash that happened in that same area around the same time Saturday.
Police arrested Erick Reyna-Herrera, 19, on a charge of driving while intoxicated after that crash. They said his SUV collided with a car, then hit the backyard wall.
Police said they’re investigating whether Reyna-Herrera (pictured below) also hit Barber, sending him catapulting over the wall.
"I love him and he's just a great person,” said Cherrell Jackson, who identified herself as Barber’s common-law wife. "I just miss him so much, and I at least want some justice."
While that is a fight the family has vowed to take up later, they are focused now on planning a funeral for Barber.
“No parent should have to go through this,” Harris said.
