Family of missing woman growing more concerned

Maria Jesus Llamas suffers from Alzheimer's disease

SAN ANTONIO – The family of Maria Jesus Llamas is becoming more concerned as time goes on. The 69-year-old, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, disappeared from the city's South Side Sunday. So far, efforts to find her have not been successful.

According to her daughter, Llamas somehow wandered away from her husband at the Poteet Flea Market. Margarita Llamas said she and her family quickly launched a search and began passing out flyers with the missing woman’s photo on them.

Since then, they’ve enlisted the help of San Antonio police and dozens of volunteers. The Heidi Search Center also has been assisting, using horses to search some of the more hard-to-reach areas.

"We're getting ATVs as well. We're hoping to get some help with some canines," said Margarita Llamas.

She said she fears, though, that it may not be enough.

"She's been out there for three nights now, so she's probably very frail,” she said. "I don't know if she's eaten anything or drank any water."

She said her family is “fearing the worst now, so we're just asking for the public's help.”

Margarita Llamas said they not only need to people to hand out flyers and search for her mother but also some to share their story through social media.

Patricia Gonzalez returned to the makeshift command post, a table set up near Highway 16 and Applewhite Road, to help search for a second day in a row.

“She doesn't know where she is or something could happen to her. So, we just wanted to come and help. Hopefully, we're able to find her,” Gonzalez said. "It's been a lot of days, so you get worried. You want to go. You want to help. "

Anyone who sees Maria Llamas is asked to call San Antonio police at (210) 207-7660 or the Heidi Search Center at (210) 650-0428.
