Fans Celebrate Tim Duncan Day at Mi Tierra

Many posed with banner at City Hall

SAN ANTONIO – After 19 years and five NBA championships, San Antonio is celebrating Spurs history with Tim Duncan Day.

It was officially proclaimed by Mayor Ivy Taylor as Thursday, the 21st, for his number, 21. The city is honoring the power forward's retirement from the San Antonio Spurs franchise.

Although he has three NBA Finals MVP trophies and two league MVP awards, many will remember Tim Duncan mostly for being the man affectionately known as "Timmy."

“My favorite memory: They're not so much, maybe, on the court. They're like his commercials and stuff," said Ashley Settles, a waitress at Mi Tierra. "I think it's the one where they're having a cookout and Tony Parker they're asking for Tim Duncan's name — and Tony Parker was, like, 'Nope, Can't find it. What's your name?' And he was, like, 'What do ya' mean, it's not on the list. It's my list. My name's Tim Duncan.’”

"It's not often that you see someone with such commitment to a certain team, you know? A lot of people, they might go to different teams for money, or for whatever reason," said Roger Tobar, a Spurs fan. "Being loyal and hardworking, you know? It's something that a lot of people can look up to."

Taylor issued the official proclamation this morning. It reads in part:

"Whereas, the true measure of a great city rests in the strengths and talents of its individual citizens, and San Antonio has held its position as one of America’s most unique cities because of the contributions by the Spurs power forward — Mr. Tim Duncan ..."

A banner reading "Thank you Tim" and "21" will hang over the steps of San Antonio City Hall until Sunday, attracting fans and cellphone pictures.

"Tim Duncan all the way. Spurs lands, nation. Whoo! Whoo!" said Enrique Caballero after posing for a picture.

“Take a picture with the sign. We love Timmy, and this is a special day," said Noemi Longoria, a fan.

The mayor asks everyone to wear Spurs colors and Tim Duncan jerseys, and to post pictures on social media using #TimDuncanDay. People can share pictures with KSAT by using the KSAT Connect App.

Businesses got into it too. At Teka Molino, on the North Side, they served 21-cent tacos for a few hours Thursday morning.

At Mi Tierra, in Market Square, it was also Priscilla Torres's 30th birthday, and her friends were decked out in Spurs gear, getting ready for a road trip to New Orleans. The last championship is how she says she'll remember Duncan.

“I got to be there, like, real close, and I got to actually go downstairs where they walk through, to get to the locker room. I don't know. He's just awesome," Torres said.
