SAN ANTONIO -

A man who was reportedly sitting on the shoulder of Interstate 10 near Medical Drive was struck and killed by a truck Tuesday evening.

The accident occurred around 7 p.m. and shut down traffic for several hours.

According to San Antonio police, witnesses saw a man sitting on the inside shoulder of I-10 in the westbound lanes.

The man tried to cross the interstate, but was struck by a white pickup truck. He was then hit several more times by other vehicles.

Traffic was forced off the interstate as officers investigated the accident. It was unknown why the man was on the shoulder. The man's name has not been released.

The interstate reopened just after 9 p.m. Tuesday.
