San Antonio -

A man is dead after he crashed his motorcycle on the city's southwest side.

It happened around 8 p.m. on Friday night at the intersection of Zarzamora and Frio City Road.

Police said the motorcycle driver -- identified later as Clemente Hernandez, 26 -- was headed south on Zarzamora at a high rate of speed, just crossing Frio City when he jumped the median onto oncoming traffic and struck a car.

Police said Hernandez was thrown from his bike and was pinned under the wheels of the car.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"He was just driving poorly and at a high rate of speed when he came off the tracks," said Sgt. Trey Roussel, with the San Antonio Police Department. "That's what carried him over the median."

Police are investigating the crash, trying to determine how fast he was going.

Officers said he was not wearing a helmet.

A barbecue fundraiser for Hernandez will be on Wednesday, July 3, beginning at 9 a.m. at 8407 Standing Rock.

Hernandez leaves behind a fiancé and a 1 1/2-year-old step daughter.
