Fire in vacant East Side home sends up huge flames, smoke

Arson investigators still looking for cause of fire

SAN ANTONIO – Arson investigators are still looking into what caused a fire in a vacant house on the city’s near East side.

The fire sent up huge flames and smoke early Wednesday morning in the area near Interstate 35 and N. Pine Street.

Someone who lives in the area called 911 just before 3 a.m.

“A neighbor said she saw fire through the roof of a house that was down the block,” said Lt. Jason Randle, with the San Antonio Fire Department. “She did tell us that the house was vacant, so we had that in mind on the way over here. "

Once they arrived, firefighters faced a challenge. The fire was too intense for them to enter the home, so they had to fight it strictly from outside.

"We're looking at a total loss, an estimated loss at about $140,000," Randle said.

At one point, firefighters were concerned that the flames would spread to a home next door. They managed to keep it contained to the original house.

They said they found no people or property inside the home.

About an hour after firefighters left the scene, they were called back to douse some embers that had reignited.

There were no injuries reported.
