The men left reluctantly, witnesses said. Then, as they drove away, the car's driver opened fire.

Alejandro Rodriguez, a security guard at the bar, was standing outside with his friend Pete Gonzales, 45, the owner of the bar.

"When I heard the first pop is when I looked over, and I saw the muzzle flash and I just said, 'They're shooting at us,'" Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez identified Faustino Vasquez, 34, as the man he saw firing at least six shots at them. One hit Gonzales. He died two hours later at the hospital.

Vasquez is now on trial for murder.
