SAN ANTONIO -

Hundreds of boxing fans packed Alamo Plaza Monday evening to watch Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. promote their mega-fight in Las Vegas this September.

The event came under heavy criticism by Texas General Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, whose office now oversees The Alamo.

Patterson claimed press conferences on the historic battleground site are not OK and desecrate the Texas shrine.

San Antonio boxing legend Jesse James Leija told KSAT's Instant Replay that the stop in front of the Alamo is their way of saying "thank you" to San Antonio.

"It means a lot because it's telling San Antonio (boxing) fans that you guys have done well and we want to share this experience with you guys as well," Leija said. "We're expecting a great crowd in front of the Alamo. But this is kind of a gift to San Antonio for supporting the sport of boxing."

Fans in attendance agreed with Leija. "That's what San Antonio is known for. I think we should show it off to the rest of the U.S.," said Jessica Garza.

"This is tourism. There's a lot of tourists down here. We're all visiting. It's a good thing. It brings money to the economy, right?" said Marcos Guardado.

The press conference was technically held on city property in front of The Alamo, which meant the city issued the permit.

If the Texas General Land Office were able to stop events on The Alamo itself, the city could still give the OK to other events in front of the site.

San Antonio was chosen as one of only 11 press tour stops.

The press conference was scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., but was delayed because Floyd Mayweather's flight was reportedly delayed.

Canelo Alvarez spoke to the crowd without Mayweather out of respect to his fans.

Mayweather finally showed up almost two hours late and offered an apology.

The Mayweather-Alvarez fight will be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Sept. 14.
