Former O.J. Simpson defense team member in SA for Innocence Project conference

Barry Scheck co-founded nonprofit to exonerate wrongfully accused

SAN ANTONIO – A former member of O.J. Simpson's legal defense team, Barry Scheck, attended a seminar in San Antonio Thursday sponsored by the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Beyond helping Simpson get acquitted, Scheck co-founded and co-directs a New York City-based nonprofit that works to exonerate the wrongfully accused.

"Peter Neufeld and I started the Innocence Project close to 25 years ago at the Benjamin R. Cardozo School of Law," Scheck said.

He said that Texas has made great strides in criminal justice reform.

"One wants to make sure that prosecutors begin to work cooperatively," Scheck said.

He said in the recent FX cable television series, "The People v. O.J. Simpson," which tells the tale of the trial that once consumed his life and made him a household name, is not an accurate portrayal of what happened during the Simpson trial.

"They compressed so much. They took out so much. I don't think it was fair to quite a number of people who were involved on the case on both sides," Scheck said.

On Friday, Scheck will be one of many criminal defense experts at the Innocence Network's annual conference. For more information on the conference, click here.
