As it is every year on Veterans Day, the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery was awash in red, white and blue on Monday.
Hundreds gathered at the cemetery to remember those who served and those who died in the line of duty.
“Those who gave their lives from freedom, they’re our heroes,” said 93-year-old Col. Hal Halvorsen.
Halvorsen, a retired Air Force pilot, flew missions during the Berlin airlift.
Though he said it is important to remember the past, it is also important not to lose sight of the future.
“As you drive down the road of life, if you look in the rear-view mirror too long, then you miss a turn off on the road to where you were going," Halvorsen said.
The ceremony was marked by a musical salute to all branches of the armed forces and a 21-volley rifle salute.
