Close to two dozen St. Philip's College employees were notified Thursday that their positions would no longer be funded and their contracts not renewed.
The staff reduction is the result of a drop in federal Title III funding, an Alamo Colleges press release stated.
Title III funding is a federal grant program that provides support to strengthen education at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Alamo Colleges learned this month that St. Philip's award for Title III funding would drop from $5.4 million for the current fiscal year to $4.3 million.
The grant funded a total of 74 positions. 34 positions will be retained, 20 will now be directly funded by the Alamo Colleges and 20 more will not be funded, the release stated.
Employees impacted by the funding cut can apply for existing positions at the Alamo Colleges.
The Alamo Colleges will also collaborate with the Texas Workforce Commission to assist affected employees in transitioning to other jobs, the release stated.
All current Title III staff will be employed through Sept. 30 with the changes taking effect on Oct. 1.
