SAN ANTONIO -

GOP gubernatorial contender Greg Abbott used Steves and Sons, one of the country’s oldest door manufacturers, as his backdrop Friday for promoting job creation.

Its owners, Edward and Sam Steves, said the company, which was started in San Antonio by their family of German immigrants 147 years ago, now has 1,000 associates nationwide, building 35,000 doors a day.

The state’s attorney general said more entrepreneurs with less government regulation could use that same spirit to build their own businesses.

“What we’ve seen time and time again is that individuals in the private sector know far better how to make business work than do a bunch of bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., or Austin, Texas,” Abbott said.

He said many out-of-state workers consider Texas the land of opportunity.

“The reason why people would leave other states to work in Texas is because other states have taxes that are too high, the government is too big,” Abbott said.

He said Texas has its history of being business friendly has paid off.

“I don’t care if you look at in just the last five years, in the last 10 years, or for the entirety of this century, Texas has created more jobs than any other state,” Abbott said.
