SAN ANTONIO -

Holt Cat, the Caterpillar equipment dealer in San Antonio and South Texas since 1933, announced a major $11 million expansion of its San Antonio facility.

With a huge American flag flying from a crane and the national anthem playing, Peter Holt, CEO of Holt Cat, announced the construction of a new 40,000-square-foot building.

Holt said the addition is a far cry from how the company started.

"About 1955, they broke ground on this facility out here,” Holt said. “I remember coming out here as a kid and hunting dove. There was nothing. (Loop) 410 was not here."

Now, the company is a big presence on the Southeast Side.

The ceremonial groundbreaking featured a bevy of state and local leaders who thanked Holt for expanding and keeping jobs here.

"We thank you for the committed legacy that has been here," said Rebecca Viagran, District 3 city councilwoman.

Precinct 4 County Commissioner Tommy Adkisson also addressed the crowd.

"Nothing but net guys, congratulations," Adkisson said.

The overall theme of the event seemed to be that if Holt Cat keeps servicing equipment like this and keeps growing, it will be ready for the future, not rusty.

The company also saluted the veterans in its workforce, who make up 17 percent of Holt employees.

State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte said veterans deserve good employment.

"Those men and women who have served in our armed forces, who really, their families have sacrificed for us: they don't need to come home and fight for a job," Van de Putte said.

And those veterans, in turn, are happy that Holt chose to expand here instead of moving out of town.

Jason Garcia is just one.

“I live about five minutes from here being on the southeast side,” Garcia said. “I'm glad Mr. Holt and his family decided to stay here, especially on the southeast side of San Antonio."

That new building will have four 10-ton cranes and four 15-ton cranes.

It will be air-conditioned and provide a better work environment for the technicians who service and repair heavy equipment here.
