A gunshot was fired early Thursday morning when a suspected home intruder broke into an apartment and got into a brief struggle with a resident.

Police said the gun-toting burglar broke into a couple's apartment in the 9000 block of Wurzbach around 4 a.m.

The couple was asleep at the Limestone Oaks Apartments when the suspect broke in through the back door, police said.

The man who lives in the apartment got into a struggle with the suspect over his gun and police said at some point the gun went off, and scared off the intruder.

The suspect fled through the back door and was joined outside by another person, who had not come inside. The pair fled on foot toward Gardendale, police said.

The resident gave police a description of the suspect. No injuries were reported.
