Historic groundwater case comes to an end in Medina County

Jury awards Braggs more than $2.5 million in battle with EAA

MEDINA COUNTY, Texas – A Medina County jury on Monday awarded Glenn and JoLynn Bragg more than $2.5 million in compensation for the Edwards Aquifer Authority's taking of the Braggs' groundwater rights.

The lawsuit, which spent a decade in the court system, claimed the EAA denied or partially denied groundwater permits for the couple's pecan orchards near Hondo and D'Hanis.

Pre-judgment interest may push the total judgment up to more than $4 million.

In a statement, the Braggs' attorney called the amount "just compensation" and went on to say, "We are thankful that the jury did not buy what the EAA was selling. It is just a shame that it has taken this long to get justice."

The EAA responded to the decision by saying the board of directors has respect for the process and they will discuss the outcome and evaluate all options at the next board meeting.
