The Federal Bureau of Investigations has released their annual crime report, showing an increase in home burglaries from 2011 to 2012.
The report, which cites residential burglaries as the most common crime committed in the city, states that there were 334 more burglaries in 2012, than the year before.
The San Antonio Police Department is encouraging all homeowners to take advantage of their free home security survey, which evaluates the potential for home break-ins.
“It's a major problem in San Antonio, it's one of our major calls,” said Ofc. Arthur Struxness, crime prevention specialists. “If we have problems within the community, business or residential, we go out and try to address those problems to make it a safer place for San Antonio.”
During the home inspection, everything from windows, doors, lighting, and other entry points are evaluated. Officers then provide the homeowner with a list of recommendations to further ensure the safety of the property.
One of the items that officers recommend on every survey, is a home security system.
“Home security systems are affordable, reliable, and can deter crime,” said Tim Krebs, spokesman for Protect America, a company that specializes in home security.
Krebs says, on average, there is a home burglary every 15 seconds in the United States, and San Antonio specifically, has experienced a recent uptick
“That's about a two percent increase,” Krebs said. “Two percent might not seem like a lot, but 334 burglaries, that's a lot of burglaries, that's a lot of people who were probably traumatized, a lot property damaged, a lot of goods that were probably stolen.”
Many companies, including Protect America, offer wireless systems with mobile apps that allow you to check on your home, from your smartphone device.
As for the home security survey, it is free to the public, and many home insurance companies offer a discount to homeowners who receive the assessment.
